Kufe

Sidetable for Galerie PHILIA

Within the Black Marble Series, this reversible side table explores duality and orientation through a deceptively simple form. Flat and minimal, the table presents two faces: one with its runner or “kufe” directed upwards, the other downwards, allowing the object to be used and experienced in alternating configurations.
Its restrained geometry emphasizes material presence and precision, while the reversible logic invites interaction and subtle experimentation. Despite its small scale, the piece maintains the series’ characteristic tension between monumentality and functionality, transforming a domestic object into a sculptural proposition.

Exclusive for Galerie PHILIA
In the Black Marble Series, comprised of five distinct pieces—or positions, in the language of contemporary sculpture— Justus Knut Schomann explores the intersection of primal form and sculptural restraint. Conceived for Gallery PHILIA and produced in Northern Italy, each object is issued in a limited edition, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
At the core of the series lies an engagement with essential typologies—archetypal shapes stripped to their barest expression. The works are at once graphic and monolithic: dark, weighty presences that command space without excess. Their visual language recalls something ancient, even proto-architectural, evoking the interior of a stone shelter or the protective void of a cave.
Despite their apparent austerity, these pieces cultivate a subtle emotional resonance. They radiate a sense of refuge and stillness, offering a quiet resistance to the speed and volatility of the contemporary. And yet, there is tension too: a latent force embedded in their mass, a held breath beneath the surface. With Black Marble Series, Justus Knut Schomann does not simply sculpt objects, but proposes environments—zones of psychological and physical gravity. It is this oscillation between comfort and severity, between form and feeling, that defines the series and marks it as a significant contribution to the discourse on contemporary material poetics.
