LIGNUM NOVUM

Wooden Bench

With LIGNUM NOVUM 01, Justus Knut Schomann extends his sculptural vocabulary into the realm of functional design, presenting a couch that challenges the boundaries between object, architecture, and landscape. Part of the broader LIGNUM NOVUM series—which also includes a single-seater and a side table—this piece is the result of an advanced additive manufacturing process that enables formal possibilities beyond the reach of traditional techniques.
Crafted from a mineral-infused wood composite derived from FSC-certified sources, the material reflects a commitment to ecological responsibility. It actively binds CO₂ over its lifespan and includes magnesium, which not only enhances durability but also grants the material a high fire-resistance rating (A2). These qualities make it particularly relevant for architects and planners seeking both expressive form and technical performance in demanding spatial contexts. The silhouette of LIGNUM NOVUM 01 is elemental yet refined—its mass and curvature evoke both shelter and openness, suggesting a primal encounter with form. The piece can be customized in dimension and adapted for outdoor use through a weatherproof coating, allowing it to function across environments without compromising its sculptural clarity.
In this work, Schomann does more than design a couch; he formulates a spatial proposal—an object that resonates with presence, permanence, and a quiet environmental intelligence.

Flora Köln is one of Cologne’s most iconic cultural landmarks, rooted in over 150 years of history as both a botanical masterpiece and architectural jewel. Originally opened in 1864 within the city’s grand botanical garden designed by renowned landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné, its elegant glass-and-iron structure was inspired by the likes of the Crystal Palace and quickly became a symbol of civic pride and cultural life in the city.
Today, the Flora remains deeply woven into Cologne’s identity, offering a serene green oasis with a remarkable diversity of plant life and historic gardens — a living testament to the city’s commitment to art, nature, and public space that continues to draw residents and visitors alike.
